Red Lotus Lake, Udon Thani

Red Lotus Lake or Nong Han Kumphawapi Lake is in Udon Thani Province in the north of Thailand. It is 8 kms long and 3 kms wide, and practically a sea of red lilies. Yes, little known fact - the flowers are lilies, not lotuses, despite the name! You hire a boat and are then ferried through labyrinthine channels all over. Quite a magical trip, taken at a leisurely pace, with the boatman happy to steady things as you aim your camera.

You have to get there in the morning because lily flowers close in the afternoon, so there is nothing much to see. The boatmen pack up and go home.
