Wat Muen Tum

Chiang Mai

Built around 1478 and situated right opposite Wat Jetlin, this small wat was originally constructed in Lanna style. It is easy for passers-by to step inside and offer a prayer or seek good fortune by burning a small incense stick (thup) to reveal a three-digit number (which can be useful when scanning the lottery ticket seller’s case). Many visitors do not go to the rear of the wat where they would be greeted by an emerald Buddha and twin golden Buddhas in a small but colourful viharn. Known locally as the sibling Buddhas, the twin statues convey distinct spiritual meanings. One looks straight ahead symbolizing outer awareness and the bestowing of good fortune, while the other looks slightly downward, representing mindfulness, and the gift of prosperity and peace.
