Loy Krathong Festival
This colourful festival is celebrated on the full moon of the 12th month of the lunar year. As the Loy Krathong song goes, 'November full moon shine, Loy Krathong, Loy Krathong...' It has its origins in thanking the water goddess, but now is taken as a chance to float away any ill-luck and bring good fortune for the new year. 'Loy' means to float, and a 'Krathong' is a decorative floral arrangement on a banana trunk cutting. The krathongs are biodegradable, but the authorities still have to clear thousands of tons of them from local ponds and lakes.
