Wat Phantao, Chiang Mai

Wat Phantao is right next to Wat Chedi Luang and, when constructed in the 15th century, was once part of its site. Its name means ‘temple of a thousand furnaces’ in reference to the many hearths and melting pots which were used for casting Buddha images through the ages. The main viharn, at 21 metres long and constructed of teak, is a rare example of a wooden assembly hall. Formerly a royal residence for Chiang Mai kings, the wat does carry an air of regal importance, enhanced by the line of paintings depicting former Thai rulers.
