Chiang Khan, Loei Province
Chiang Khan is a small town in Loei Province situated on the banks of the Mekong River. What sets it apart is the boardwalk promenade alongside the river, and the fact that the main street turns into a night market every evening. There is such a wonderful vibe to the town that it really is in the 'best kept secret' category. Laos is directly across the river, which offers great sunsets and misty-morning breakfast views. The nearby peak, Phu Thok, enjoys tremendous views above the clouds at sunrise (separate page). There is also a glass walkway about 20 kms west. For the best atmosphere, visit at the weekend when the whole mood turns festive.

South of Chiang Khan in Ban Na Pa Nat is the
Tai Dam (Black Tai) Cultural Centre. This tribal
group emigrated from Laos in 1905 and has
preserved its language and traditions in
house-building and weaving.
There are also daily performances of music and
dance for tour-groups, plus handicrafts for sale.
