Karuizawa, South East Nagano
Karuizawa was once a summer retreat for the Imperial family, and is now a popular location for those who keep a second home. The town is just a one-hour Shinkanzen ride from Tokyo. Although the population is only twenty-thousand, over eight million visitors per year are expected. Besides being picturesque, there is an arty vibe to the place. It is also handy for all the nearby winter activities.
Autumn leaves are a particular attraction.
