yamagata, yamagata Prefecture
|
Yamagata, the million city, is the capital Yamagata Prefecture in the Tohoku region (the northern part of Honshu Island). It presents as rather workaday, but it does boast the lovely Kajo Park and the remains of Yamagata Castle, resplendent when the cherry trees are in full bloom. For trips out you have the popular Zao Onsen for skiing or viewing its snow monsters (trees enveloped in rime and snow). There is also Ginzan Onsen, with its kawai frontage of restaurants, shops and inns astride the river – definitely a rewarding day trip or night-time stopover. Finally, you’ve got nearby Yamadera Temple (Risshakuji), with its 1,000 steps all of the upward variety! Yamagata is a worthy base for a few days if you are travelling up north, and connects directly with Tokyo by Shinkansen.
