Wat Thap Kradan in Suphanburi Province contains a shrine dedicated to the legendary singer Phumphuang Duangchan (Pueng), who grew up in the area. Pueng is credited with popularising Thai country music known as Luk Thung. The lyrics of luk thung songs typically deal with rural themes, with the vocalist often singing in a country accent. Following Pueng’s untimely death from lupus at the age of 30 in 1992, a cult has grown up. Her tragic life, played out in public against a backdrop of a manipulating family and managers, was clearly relatable, thus cementing her status as the people's star. A belief is generally held that praying to Pueng’s spirit will lead to good fortune. In particular, lottery hopefuls make the pilgrimage having heard tales of unexpected good luck befalling devotees!
