Wat Sirindhorn Wararam has gained its prominent status as the wat that glows in the dark. This is due to the fluorescent paint on the ubosot and surrounding approaches. The patterns slowly come alive after dark, creating a stunning visual effect. Located on a hill near the town of Chong Mek, it is a 1.5 hour drive from Ubon, not that the fleets of minibuses were deterred. Looking one way you have the Sirindhorn Reservoir and the other way you are looking towards Laos and the Bolaven Plateau. Once the sun sets though, your gaze is entirely upon the wat. On this occasion, a thunderous downpour made photography difficult and had the minibuses beating a hasty retreat. The glow was there all right but you needed the latest camera and phone technology to amplify it.
