Wat Ratchapradit Sathit Maha Simaram is just a couple of minutes’ walk away from the Grand Palace. The land was originally designated as the Royal Coffee Plantation before being converted to a wat in the 19th century by Rama IV. The exteriors are covered in grey marble tiles which were installed in the time of King Mongkut, this includes the bell-shaped Sri Lankan styled chedi. The interiors have murals depicting Buddhist teachings and festivals – these were painted when King Chulalongkorn was on the throne. Wat Ratchapradit has a quiet charm despite its seemingly obscure standing – neither of the two taxi drivers approached had heard of it, even though we were a mere ten-minute drive away. Heading back towards Sanam Chai MRT station, which is just a short walk away, you pass parallel across the road to the more renowned Wat Ratchabophit – all taxi drivers know that one.
