This is the sort of wat that appears on TikTok and FB reels, so most people in Thailand know about it. Not so many may have been there though, for the simple reason that it is not in the middle of nowhere, but rather, on the outer edges of nowhere! The significance of the turtle in Buddhism is that it is a symbol of longevity. Phaya Tao Ruean are turtle amulets which are much prized, and here there were many on display ready for purchase. The abbot who founded the temple, Luang Pu Liew is commemorated riding a giant turtle which is the focus for pilgrims’ prayers. Outside, there are the Teenage Ninja variety as well as bunches of morning glory to feed to the real ones. The drive back to Bangkok on this occasion coincided with two heavies: heavy rain and heavy traffic – ensuring a long and nervy rush-hour trip.
