This is a very old wat, dating from the time of the Haripunchai Kingdom. The kingdom of Mon peoples existed from the 7th-13th centuries, with the capital located at Lamphun. The main chedi is unusual in that it is square-shaped, with Buddha statues in tiered alcoves; it used to feature on the one-satang coin. The chedi at the ‘ruined city’ of Wiang Kum Kam in Chiang Mai is also modelled on it. The wat is well cared for and a calm place to wander around.
