Wat Paknam was established in 1610 during the Ayutthaya period. Over the years it has seen ups and downs ranging from royal patronage to near abandonment. More recently it has been in the news for various political and financial reasons (all extensively documented on Wikipedia). Today it promotes education and public health and supports many charities. Located on the khlong, Bangkok Yai, which joins the Chao Phraya River, it can be reached by longtail boat, or from BTS Bang Phai and a ten-minute walk. To find it, just follow your app, or look up to see the 70-metre-tall Buddha statue (begun in 2017 and completed in 2021) which dominates the townscape. Expect crowds of devotees at weekends.
