Wat Huay Pla Kang just north of Chiang Rai is visible from miles around, thanks to its enormous white statue (the lift inside goes up 25 floors). The wat style is known as Chinese-Lanna, which distinguishes it from the usual Thai-Lanna designs in northern Thailand. The adjacent pagoda is a 9-storey pyramid shape whose entrance is guarded by Chinese dragons rather than Thai Yaks, illustrating the Chinese-Thai fusion throughout. The pagoda is topped by a bell-shaped traditional Thai chedi. The huge statue is an image of Guan Yin, the Goddess of Mercy. Known as Kuan Im in Thailand, people pray to her for good health and good fortune.
