Three Whale Rock, or Hin Sam Waan, is a sandstone formation some 30 minutes south-east of Bueng Kan in North-East Thailand. From above, the outcrops resemble three whales: a mommy, daddy and calf. It used to be a tough hike to get up there from the base, but now there is a steep concrete road which accommodates a baht-bus. At 500 baht for a bus plus guide, the trip includes five stops at various viewpoints. You can also hire a drone for a 1,000 baht to capture the true whale experience. The highlight is taking in the air and spectacular views from the two larger outliers. Yellow tape stuck to the rock lets you know how far you can safely venture and the windsock gives you an indication of likelihood of you being consigned to the abyss (as happened to a tourist a couple of years ago).
