Takayama, Gifu Prefecture
|
One of the main draws of Takayama in mountainous Gifu Prefecture is the Sanmachi Suji district. This is an area of narrow lanes hemmed in by wooden houses dating from the Edo Period. The town was well established before then and is now a popular attraction being in the heart of the Japanese Alps. The 10,000’ Hakodate is nearby and accessible via a Shinhotaka Ropeway. It is also possible to make excursions to the Kamokachi Valley and Shirakawa-go to see the gasso-sukuri houses. All of this might account for the hordes of tourists that descend upon the place, even off-season. Of note: ‘Hida-Takayama’ is the adopted name of the town to distinguish itself from other Takayamas in Japan.
