The Ryukyu Islands form an archipelago to the south of Japan, with Okinawa being the largest island in the group. People typically visit the islands for their tropical beaches and water-based activities such as scuba diving. Naha is the capital of Okinawa Prefecture and lies on the main island, which is very much workaday. 

The Battle of Okinawa during which hundreds of thousands of soldiers and civilians lost their lives, is commemorated at the Cornerstone of Peace. Some 240,000 inscriptions can be found there, at the site of fierce fighting.

Shuri Castle Park is a World Heritage Site. From 1429 to 1879 it was the palace of the Ryukyu Kingdom.
