the Nakasendo Trail, Gifu Prefecture
|
The Nakasendo Trail was one of the main routes between Kyoto and Tokyo during the Edo period (1603-1868). It translates as ‘central mountain route’ and was preferred by many as it didn’t require fording rivers. It passed through 69 post-towns, two of which are now declared ‘national treasures’ and have been preserved to keep the original flavour. You can walk between Magome-juku and Tsumago-juku (in either direction) in three hours or so. It is about eight kms and a bit up and down but definitely more down if you do it the M to T way round. Sections of the trail also still have the original stone paving, giving you a sense of its history, allowing your imagination to conjure up samurai following in the shadows. The easiest way to get to Magome is to take the train to Nakasugawa (from Nagoya or Matsumoto), then the bus to the start of the trail. These photos are from early November when temperatures were 20-24c in the daytime.
