nagano, Zenko-ji Temple
|
The Zenko-ji temple dates from the seventh century; in fact the town of Nagano grew up around it. The main Buddha image arrived from India in the 6th century; it is a hibutsu (secret Buddha) statue which can’t be shown to the public, not even to the abbot. How intriguing! Visiting on a Saturday you will not be short of company, with long queues for the temple interior, despite there being a ban on photos and videos in there.
