Lamphun is 25 kms south of Chiang Mai. It was the capital of the 11th Century Haripunchai Mon Kingdom. Wat Phra That Haripunchai was founded in 897, but the current compound dates from 1044. The unusual pyramid shaped Chedi Suwanna was built in 1418, and the main stupa restored in 1443, in classic Lanna style. Lamphun is a quiet town on the Ping River, which seemed to be the only thing moving on the day that I was there.
