Kusatsu onsen
Gunma Prefecture

Kusatsu Onsen is located 200 kms north-west of Tokyo and has been a popular spa-resort since the 1800s. Its waters are said to cure all maladies except lovesickness! Although the town has a population of only 7,000 it welcomes over 3 million visitors every year. The centrepiece is the bubbling turquoise pond, Yubatake, whose waters flow into a series of wooden cooling troughs. Around this natural phenomenon are a circle of buildings in retro-Taisho Roman and Edo styles. These eateries and souvenir shops all bear the tag ‘boutique’ comfortably. As if daytime wasn’t photogenic enough, the evening lights plus steam will have your phone slavering (or something like that).
