flower festival, chiang mai
|
The annual festival is held in the first week of February to mark the transition from the cool season. It is styled as, ‘The Charm of Blossoms and Beauty of Wiang Ping Flora’, which presumably sounds a lot better in Thai! (Wiang is an original Tai word meaning ‘fortified settlement’, with Ping being the name of the local river.) The event focuses on Nong Buad Hard Park just inside the city walls to the south-west. Entering, you are greeted by carpets of tulips, hydrangeas, marigolds and orchids. Misty spray keeps everything fresh as the masses shuffle along framing photos as they go. The stage features Lanna song and dance as well as the aptly named ‘Ms Flower’ competition. The highlight though is the parade on the Saturday morning (see separate page).
