The capital of the Sukhothai Kingdom was moved to Phitsanulok on the Nan River in 1362. It was the residence of the monarch during both the Sukhothai and the Ayutthaya periods, but was abandoned after the Siamese-Burmese war of 1775-6. The site now features the ruins of the original palace as well as several ancient temples, a modern shrine to King Naresuan the Great, and the historical museum. The museum itself is well curated, with the exhibits annotated in both Thai and English.
