From the 9th-13th Century, Bagan was the capital of the Bagan Kingdom - it is now a World Heritage Site. At its height, over 10,000 pagodas were built. However, situated in an earthquake zone, many have been damaged in the 400 or so earthquakes recorded. A restoration programme began in the 1990s and has made progress, but many are still in poor condition. It is impossible to frame the scene adequately, so widespread are the temples. A hot air balloon is one option, although a rentable e-bike will keep you more firmly on the ground. You can stay on the Irrawaddy River and put your feet up for sunset after a hard day in the field.
